Our story
About Us
We are a group of students from the University of Texas at Austin united by a shared mission to support skin cancer awareness, research, and patient care. Founded by Tania Aburto Perez, sol project is a student-led initiative that creates entirely handmade bracelets, shares them with our community, and donates 100% of profits to the Melanoma Research Foundation.
What began in Austin, Texas, has grown into a community-driven effort reaching both Austin and Houston. Every bracelet represents compassion, hope, and our commitment to advancing melanoma research while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by skin cancer.
Beyond fundraising, we believe education is one of the most powerful tools for prevention. Through the packaging accompanying each bracelet, we share information about sun-safe practices, skin cancer prevention, proper nutrition, and other health resources to help encourage healthy habits and raise awareness.

Why we make them
Our Mission
sol means "sun" in Spanish—a vital part of our solar system and essential to life on Earth. While the sun provides warmth and light, prolonged exposure to its ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) rays can damage our skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.
Through sol project, we hope to spread skin cancer awareness, support research and patient care, and inspire everyday sun-safe habits. Each handmade bracelet serves as a small reminder to care for yourself and the people you love, while helping make a meaningful difference in the fight against skin cancer.

Why We Support the Melanoma Research Foundation
The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is the largest independent nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Since its founding in 1996, the MRF has supported innovative research, advanced clinical trials, provided educational resources, and connected patients and families with support throughout their journey.
We chose to partner with the MRF because we believe that research, education, and compassionate care are essential to improving outcomes for those affected by melanoma. Their commitment to prevention, early detection, and scientific discovery aligns closely with the mission of sol project.
